Physical Education at Pao School aims to develop students’ physical competence and knowledge of movement and their ability to use these to participate in a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle. It also develops in students, both as individuals and in groups or teams, confidence, collaboration, communication, creativity, analytical thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These, together with the nurturing of Pao School’s core values in PE, are foundations for students’ lifelong learning to face the challenges of the 21st century. Students begin by learning to move and graduate to moving to learn.

We aim to develop in each student, the knowledge, understanding, skill, values and attitudes needed to lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives. In doing so, the PE syllabus forms the basis for students to adopt a responsible and productive role in society. Our students will be able to:

  • be physically active and find enjoyment in physical activity
  • find a lasting sense of purpose, achievement and fulfilment in physical activity
  • develop physical skills, habits and interests that will promote a healthy lifestyle
  • develop positive attitudes to sports including resilience, cooperation, fair play and correct sporting behaviour
  • be able to cope with success and failure
  • learn how physical exercise affects the body
  • understand the need for safe practice in physical activities and know how to achieve this.

Students in Year 1-5 have three timetabled sessions of PE per week (1 lesson of PE Ties in their house groups, 1 lesson of swimming and 1 lesson of team sports). Each lesson is 40 minutes in duration and is taught in English and Chinese.

Students will also be given opportunities to participate in the school sports teams. These are currently: Football (Boys’ and Girls’) Basketball, Athletics, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Fencing, Rugby, Netball, Cricket and Swimming. Through these teams and our affiliation with the Shanghai Schools Sports Association (SSSA), we hope to engage our students’ bodies and minds in an enjoyable, focused and healthy way.

All physical education lessons and sports team training sessions are considered an essential and compulsory part of the school’s curriculum. The goals of the PE department are to have every student participating as much as possible in as many sports and physical activities as we can provide, while they give their own best efforts to reach their potential as an athlete as well as an individual. Above all, we value effort, attitude and commitment as key qualities we expect from each student.
